Made with wholemeal flour and raw cane sugar, and left un-iced, this cake is better for you than most. Serves 8<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/veganchristmas.co.uk\/vegan_info\/img\/recipes\/chocolate-cake.jpg\" alt=\"Chocolate cake\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ingredients<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>200g (8 oz.) plain wholemeal flour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100g (4 oz.) vegan margarine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100g (4 oz.g) raw cane sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 tablespoon golden syrup<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>175ml (1\/3 pint) orange juice (or use soya milk)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 tablespoons baking powder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 tablespoons cocoa powder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 tablespoon orange peel, finely grated (or use chopped mixed nuts)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 4 \/ 250\u00b0F \/ 180\u00b0C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grease a medium sized square tin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cream together margarine, sugar and syrup in a mixing bowl.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put the orange juice (or soya milk) into a jug and stir in the bicarbonate of soda. Add it to the bowl.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sift flour, baking powder, cocoa and salt and gradually stir into the bowl. Add orange peel or nuts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spoon the mixture (which will be quite sloppy) into the greased tin. Generously sprinkle the top with more sugar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bake for about 35-40 minutes, until cooked in the centre.
